Irish legend has it that there is a pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow. Judy Garland’s land “somewhere over the rainbow” and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow are merely figments of the imagination. But we have something real to dream about that’s much better than those.
In Revelation 4:2-3, the apostle John recorded what he first saw when Jesus invited him to view Heaven. It says: “At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.” By the way, did you know that the rainbows we see here on earth are actually round? We only see the part that is above the horizon.
When the things of life seem difficult, read the description of heaven in the 21st and 22nd chapters of Revelation. All those whose names are found in the “book of life” because they have received eternal life through faith in Christ can look forward to being there someday. The 18th verse of Revelation 21 says: “The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.” The last half of the 21st verse says: “The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.”
Beyond all the beauty, one of the great joys of Heaven will be who we see when we get there. We will be reunited with all of our loved ones with faith who have already gone there. If there is someone we wished we would have seen there, in Revelation 21:4 God promises His people that “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” We will see Abraham and Moses and the disciples and Paul . . . and St. Patrick, too. But the best part of all is that we will see Jesus, the One who loved us so much that He died on the cross for us.
