Want to wish a friend or relative the best of St. Patrick’s Days, while reminding them why this special day came to be? After all, this day wasn’t really set aside just to joke about the leprechauns and getting the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and drinking green beer.
The man this day commemorates was born into this world way back near the end of the fourth century. He went through the devastating experience of being kidnapped from his home in Britain by pirates during his youth, and he ended up serving as a slave in Ireland. While he served as a slave tending sheep in harsh circumstances and solitude, God did a work in his heart. The biblical things he had learned as a child began to become real and meaningful to him.
God miraculously revealed to Patrick a means of escape back to his home by ship. But after returning to his home, he had two visions showing him that God was calling him to go back to the land where he had suffered. After being trained as a bishop, he answered the call. He returned to Ireland to encourage the Christians there and to undertake the task of spreading the gospel to the dangerous tribes of pagans who inhabited the land. (For more details about St. Patrick’s life, see the category on this website called “The Amazing Story of St. Patrick.”)
St. Patrick is a great example of a man with the courage to follow a calling to a difficult and dangerous task. So why not send someone a greeting and a little inspiration for St. Patrick’s Day? I used to find it reliable to allow three days for a card to make it all the way across the country by means of the U.S. Postal Service, but it may take a little longer these days. And of course, cards won’t be delivered on a Sunday without special delivery.
Below you will find a way to print out the St. Patrick’s Day greeting card I’m providing, along with an envelope. All you have to do is fold the card in half the long way and again the other way, and it’s ready for you to sign. Here’s a little tip for assembling the envelope. It’s easier to fold backwards on the fold lines and then forward, since it’s hard to see exactly where you’re folding when the line is on the inside.
