St. Patrick’s Day was instituted as a day to remember a man who was kidnapped from England as a teen and, after finally escaping and returning home, answered God’s call to bravely spread the Gospel in the pagan land of Ireland. It wasn’t really created as a day to indulge in heavy drinking nor even a day to talk about mythical leprechauns and good luck.
Here is a way to remind people of the real purpose of St. Patrick’s Day. If you wear this T-shirt, it’s likely to open conversation by means of people asking you what it means. You can tell them that there is a legend that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach people about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A legend is a story handed down that hasn’t been proven. We don’t know for sure that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach about the Trinity, but we do know that he taught the Irish that God the Father sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for our sins and that, if we believe in Jesus and are truly sorry for our sins, the Holy Spirit will come and live in us. See? You can squeeze the Gospel into your answer.

You could even carry some copies of the little flyer provided here. You could hand one to someone who asked about the shirt and say something like, “Here are some Bible passages that explain the Good News spread by St. Patrick.” If you don’t have a printer, you may be able to access one at a library or elsewhere. Making this T-shirt will take a little effort on your part, but it will be worth it to remind people of the real reason we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially if it brings someone to God. There are a couple of other options suggested for painting the letters in a different way.
