The core of the story unfolded in this movie is a dad who is determined not to allow his daughter to be sold deception about creation and have her faith stolen from her. The movie opens with the dad and his pre-teen daughter Rachel walking across a covered bridge and standing by the water. A boy steals a coin that young Rachel has found. The significance of the stolen coin is revealed later. A leap in time shows Rachel as an attractive young woman packing up for college.
After Rachel begins attending the university, Dad is alarmed when he discovers that Rachel’s biology professor, Marcus Kaman [Kay’ – mun], is unfairly teaching biology with a strong bias in favor of Evolution. Dad embarrasses his daughter by paying a visit to the smug Professor Kaman, and he ends up being challenged to a debate on Evolution versus Creationism. A Christian student named Evan Carlson tries to hook up Dad with a professor named Joseph Portland who once taught biology at the university from a creationist viewpoint and lost his job due to Professor Kaman. Professor Portland is still bitter and wants nothing to do with helping Dad prepare for the debate. Rachel continually begs her dad to cancel the debate.
Mingled in the story are some guys on campus who try to start up relationships with Rachel for the wrong motives. Evan warns her of the intent of one student named Tyler to wear her down. It is Evan who challenges Rachel about the strength of her commitment to God in regard to defending the truth of creation.
Dad nervously shows up for the debate, even though he has never debated in his life. He starts out pretty well but ends up cornered by the arrogant Professor Kaman. In answer to prayers, God provides an unexpected solution.
The movie ends with Evan and Rachel walking across the covered bridge the following Saturday afternoon and Evan making a surprise revelation. No, it isn’t an engagement ring, if that’s what you’re thinking. If you can’t guess what it is, you’ll have to watch the movie to find out.
This 2014 movie lasts an hour and a half. The script is pretty well written, so the time seemed to me to go by pretty quickly. I think this movie makes a very good point about the importance of being willing to defend your faith and being prepared to do it. Below is a trailer.
