The 2012 movie called Indescribable is based on the true story of the writing of a beloved hymn—one with some of the most beautiful lyrics every written, in my estimation. The subject of the hymn called “The Love of God” is the indescribable nature and value of God’s love. It was quite a surprise to discover how the third verse was acquired.
To be honest, when I first started watching this movie, I thought it might turn out to be a “dud.”
It seems to be a low-budget production. I found the scene from the past that was inserted into the opening a little confusing. It is a part of the story that comes into play later. Some of the acting skills didn’t seem quite the level we are accustomed to. Rich Swingle, however, did seem quite convincing as Pastor Lehman, and the children had a certain charm. The plot seemed to drag a little at first. But I decided to see it through.
The story takes place during World War I. Pastor Lehman, who begins writing a poem about the love of God, is a loving dad with several children. His church falls on hard times and can no longer afford to give him a full-time salary. He asks his family members to do whatever they can to help out. The younger children hold “meetings” to come up with an idea to do their part. They decide that if they can help their dad write a third verse for his poem and get someone to write music for it, they can get money for getting it published as a song. I won’t tell you how they come up with a third verse. That is a very intriguing part of the story.
A ways into the story, it began to grab my heart. Pastor Lehman’s ten-year-old son Blynn, played by Seth Pruski, is having trouble understanding how to love God, especially in the midst of difficult circumstances. When he prays, he tries to use words he has heard adults use in their prayers, but he can’t even pronounce them. His beloved older brother is drafted into the service. He gives Blynn a hanging crystal as a reminder of God’s love. The conundrum of what that meant wouldn’t be revealed until later.
Before the story ended, I was wiping away tears. If you watch it, perhaps you, too, will end up wiping tears. Not only can the story eventually capture the hearts of those watching it, but it also has some important principles embedded in it about the ways to truly love God. It speaks of the depth of God’s love for us and how we can love God back with our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, as Jesus spoke of in Mark 12:30.
This movie lasts 94 minutes. If you are patient, I think you will find much value in it. If you have the DVD, you will have access to some bonus features. If you enjoy seeing how a movie comes together, you can watch the “Fantastic Four” (about some of the main children in the movie and their auditions, etc.), “Behind the Scenes,” “Deleted Scenes,” and “Bloopers.” There is also a bonus feature called “The Love of God.” It is a video contest wherein amateurs made videos of various ways to perform the song “The Love of God.” A couple of the entries are . . . shall we say. . . VERY unusual.
At this time the entire movie is available on YouTube , having been uploaded by Christian Movies. Below is a link to the trailer to give you the flavor of the movie and a link to the entire movie.
I appreciated your sharing that some of the technical aspects aren’t what we are used to. I have found there are movies that don’t have million dollar budgets but they do have heart. It’s great you have the movie a chance .
